Based on the theory of van Dijk’s Consciousness Boxes in conceptual metaphors and discourse analysis of cognitive linguistics, this article constructs the theoretical framework of discourse analysis and analyzes the relevant reports of China Daily and the New York Times on the dispute over the RMB exchange rate between China and the United States. The study shows that when conceptualizing the exchange rate issue, both media adopted a metaphor of war, expressing their attitudes toward the incident. When conceptualizing the two sides of the exchange rate dispute, there was a big difference between the two newspapers. Both sides conceptualize one as positive and positive and the other as negative and negative. Finally, the paper analyzes the reasons for this conceptual difference - both sides have different understandings on the root causes of the economic crisis. China and the United States each consider themselves to be correct in their understanding.
