From the 18th to the 19th centuries, Guangzhou was the most important port city for the exchange between China and foreign countries. Many Western artists took this event as its center of activity. The European painters from Guangdong and China recorded the Chinese paintings as real records of Chinese customs and practices at that time. Although these images were mostly simple scenes, the records of the writings corresponded with the portrayal of the images, thus making up for the limited gap in the historical documents.
