Nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria in paddy fields can supply nitrogenous fertilizers to rice, increase soil organic matter, increase soil fertility, and increase the yield of rice. This fact has been confirmed and affirmed in many experiments in Japan and India. At about 1958, the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences started to study the fixation of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria in Hubei Province.
